Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“The Son of Man himself did not come to be served but to serve.”

Last week, I focused on wisdom and enlightenment. God became human for our benefit – and showed in his life how we can live an enlightened life – by being of use to others.

Serving means helping, enhancing life, supporting – even educating and correcting – members of our family and communities. Before speaking, listen, empathise – and now that I am old,  I THINK. T-H-I-N-K: Is, what I am about to say, True? Helpful? Inspiring? Necessary? Kind?

I have discovered that living by giving is the most satisfying way to move through life on my journey to eternity. This is not my motivation – simply the inevitable outcome.

After all, Jesus promised - in Luke 6:38; “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.”

Proverbs 19:6 states that, “Many seek the favour of a generous man, and everyone is a friend to a man who gives gifts.” Maybe that is why I have so many friends.

Every morning I ask myself, “what can I do – to whom – today?” Apart from looking after my 91year old with severe dementia, there are thoughts I can put down in writing that, I hope, will help people enhance their own lives – and by writing keep my brain active and thus less prone to be invaded by dementia.

A good friend of mine whose businesses were destroyed by our Covid lockdown, started his own funeral services company and has happily confessed that being there with and for those who are suffering bereavement has given his life the greatest satisfaction – more than he had imagined. He has promised that he will take my funeral pro bono: my good and indeed his!
