Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“let your light shine before others.”

This quote reminds me to be present and active in my communities; to act in ways that benefit others, showing God's love. I know I am called to be a witness, making others curious about God.

Friedrich Nietzsche famously said, "I might believe in the Redeemer if his followers looked more redeemed."  This statement echoed  Mahatma Gandhi’s "I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ."

Bear in mind that Adolf Hitler was baptized as an infant in the Roman Catholic Church and later confirmed, as his mother was a devout Catholic.

And Joseph Stalin was christened as a Greek Orthodox Christian shortly after his birth in  1878.

On the other hand,  when Cardinal  Basil Hume was asked how he became a priest, he used to say that he would accompany the Parish Priest of the Dominican parish in Newcastle on his rounds to visit families in the early 1930s. Bear in mind, this was the Depression.  He made it clear that “The joy on the faces of the family as he came in through the front door, and the smile on his face as we left, moved me to want to become like him when I grew up.”

Basil Hume almost became a Dominican. However, studying at Ampleforth, he became a Benedictine – and eventually in 1976 Archbishop of Westminster. And became Queen Elizabeth’s “Favourite Cardinal”. And gave him the Order of Merit, the highest honour in the UK Only 24 living people can have this honour.

How redeemed do you look? How much joy , optimism and hope do you exude?

What will be said about you at your funeral eulogy?

When people see you at peace and not only enjoying life but helping your community, it might make them think.
